Costa Rica In Full Vacation Mode

If you noticed that the traffic was much lighter than normal this morning, barrios with few people and school zones with no children in sight, it is because the mid-year school vacation is in full swing, as families in Costa Rica head for the beaches and resorts.
Traffic spot checks are intensified during the mid-year vacation period.
While San José is calm, beaches like Jacó - the closest to San José - are full to the brim. Other locations with activity are the beaches of Guanacaste, the national parks in the area of La Fortuna in Arenal.
The two week vacation period is also a dangerous period as water and traffic accidents play a major role, as vacationers sometimes leave common sense at home and/or overdo alcohol consumption.
As such, the Policía de Tránsito (traffic police), along with the Fuerza Pública (police), the Policía Turistica (tourist police), the Cruz Roja (Red Cross) and other agencies are all on maximum alert and with campaigns to keep fatalities low.
The Cruz Roja and Fuerza Pública are on full alert and have set up posts in major areas, while the Tránsito has spot checks and other operatives to control drunk and reckless driving on the highways.
And although the country is in the midst of a vacation period, banks and government agencies and institutions are open. As to private business, some are open, others closed. Call ahead if you have a doctor or dentist appointment or need to visit your lawyer's office.
The mid year vacation break ends on Sunday 17 July, as Costa Rica returns to normal on Monday 18 July.
